First Cold Pint

In that bar on this square
I would often sit in the morning
At ten, sipping coffee
Waiting for the time of the strange puppet
And he would always come
At the same hour
With the same iron will
Staggering to the same table
The first cold pint, hard to swallow
The second, tepid, quickly down
Next ones bottoms up.
At noon, I would sit again
With my cheerful comrades
At the bar where we were learning
How to drink more and faster
And he would still sit there
At the same table
With his lifeless sunken eyes
Ordering beers two by two.

Kermesse
03:32

Maandag, weer het pensen kermis
En dat zal zeker niet stinken
Dinsdag, het Oberbayern feest
En dat zal niet overal braken
Woensdag, dieren markt
Pissen en kacken op mijn trottoir
Weer lawaai, shit
Die omnuzel
A smoel toe
Djuu, vandaag is kermesse
Vrijdag, mossel feest
Roep’n en tier’n
Als een beest
Zaterdag, alles geven
Plass’n en spitt’n op mijn auto
Zondag, kerk en frieten dag
Iedereen eindelijk still en laag.

Another Station
02:29
|
|||
What is there left than
To abort these few lines
When the gentle two kilowatt neon light
Burns the tip of my hair
While my beer extinguishes itself
In the smoky thick air
What is there left
Of this third rated station bar?
Another station, another trip and yet
The same old tunes
Rustling bells
In foggy ears
At time, when dismay
And chaos step in
A sudden golden flavour tantalizes you
Why the haste
When the pain of trips to be
Is still there to tell you where you were?
Running from a past to live
Perhaps a stop to think
Might be the best of trips to stir
Jacket and tie neatly packed in my brown leather case
A sweaty hand
Picks the jug shamely earned
While a train whistles past
And it’s already too early
When the third mug is absorbed
In a swift melancholy.

The Union
03:30
|
|||
The day they came to close the factory
They kicked us straight into the street
Where sign and calicoes
Squatted the town for days and days
We smashed the yuppie cars
And painted the factory walls
But truncheons and grenades
Were soft beside our wills
The union claimed
We’d rather die
Than take the queue of the dole office
Everybody would agree
But the fight lasted too long
And when the politics closed their eyes
And when the papers shut their mouths
The union said we should have guessed
The union said we should have known
The union claims and the working man pays.
